503A pharmacy or sourcing platform: what is the difference?

A 503A compounding pharmacy is the licensed entity that actually compounds and dispenses a preparation, against a prescription for a named patient, under its state board of pharmacy. It is regulated as a pharmacy and answerable to a pharmacy regulator.

A sourcing platform sells a clinic access to pharmacies. It may route orders to one pharmacy or many, negotiate rates, supply ordering software or manage the relationship. It is a commercial intermediary, and the compounding is done by somebody else.

Both can be the right choice. A clinic that wants one accountable relationship and a single ordering system may prefer a platform; a clinic that would rather hold the pharmacy relationship directly may prefer to deal with the pharmacy. What matters is knowing which one is being offered, and comparison sites that rank the two together make that hard to see.
